A UK-SL Education Partnership
On 31st January 2018, His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, and Her Royal Highness, Sophie The Countess of Wessex visited Third Space Global, a British owned company which employs young Sri Lankans to deliver online one-to-one teaching to more than 6000 primary school children across the UK. Third Space Global also support Sri Lankan education through its free eLearning Hubs for children and free Teaching and Learning Workshops for teachers
The Royal couple unveiled a plaque with the company’s new mission statement “We seek social change by cultivating a global community of the most ambitious talent to make effective online teaching more accessible than ever before.” Their Royal Highnesses briefly joined this global community by interacting with primary students back in the UK via Third Space Global’s virtual classroom.
The royal couple were welcomed to Third Space Global by its CEO, Roshan Nilaweera and his wife, along with senior management and the CEO of Orion City, Jeevan Gnanam. The Earl and Countess of Wessex were given a tour of TSG’s recently opened office at Orion City where they saw first hand the 200-strong staff delivering online teaching.
The Royal couple later addressed staff discussing the importance of education and the challenges and opportunities of a more connected world. Mr Nilaweera praised his staff stating “I believe education is the most important investment a country can make in its future, this applies to Sri Lanka and the UK. We should all feel very proud of the great role we play in supporting UK children whilst providing training and employment opportunities here in Sri Lanka.”
The positive impact of this successful UK-SL education partnership is set to continue to grow as Third Space Global plan to expand their operations and CSR projects over the next 18 months.
